The Hood Canal Bridge had to reopen on time. The deadline was approaching and the underwater cables still needed to be inspected. Our customer came to us with a design for a camera sled that would ride down the cables and carry the cameras that would verify their integrity. Our fabricators, working with the contractors’ engineers, overcame some design issues and delivered the project on time. The bridge opened as scheduled and the many commuters that cross the Hood Canal on a daily basis were spared the inconvenience of finding another way across. |

China’s vision, for over 25 years, has been to build a world class transport system connecting their manufacturing powerhouse in the Pearl River Delta with Hong Kong and Macau. In 2003, this dream became a reality with the creation of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge coordination group. Work began on a 50km (23.9 mi) network of bridges and tunnels on December 15th 2009.
The project requires driving over 130 – 72 foot diameter piles for its anchors. Driving pile this large is unprecedented in the pile driving industry. For this groundbreaking project, the Chinese government turned to American Pile Driving Enterprises (APE). APE turned to Machine and Fabrication to build the 8 SuperKong vibratory hammers and the 24 hydraulic clamps required for the OctoKong,. The timeline was short—a missed delivery could have derailed the whole project. Because of the trust earned through our long working relationship, APE knew we would deliver. Our manufacturing team, many of whom have worked for us for over 10 years, took on the challenge with gusto. We made the seemingly impossible task possible. Through the hard work and dedication of our employees, we made all our deliveries on time and free of defects. Machine and Fabrication is very proud to be a part of this historic project. We are even more proud of our great team who enabled us to come through for our customer. |

A design engineer asked if we were interested in building a hydraulic motor driven winch he designed. We had never built a winch, but we thought it would be fun. It was a one-of-a-kind design and required very close collaboration with the designer to insure the project’s success. The winch is still in operation on the Columbia River. |
